Introducing John Peter Archer and Lindsey Noakes

Here we go: our blog is officially live!

After months of reading fantastic blogs that have informed, inspired and challenged us, we thought it was time to start our own.

We have spent the last two-and-a-bit years building Gather from scratch. If you haven’t heard our story: we met in November 2015, one week later we agreed to start a new nonprofit, and in January 2016 Gather was born!

Throughout it all, we’ve been driven by our shared desire to enable people to achieve their potential, and to leverage the resources available to us to drive significant lasting change. This is why we get so excited about sanitation: without toilets, nothing else really works. Toilets change everything.

Two years has flown by. It has been quite the learning journey. We have both had to wear several hats, navigate start-up life, and build a growing coalition of philanthropists, partners and practitioners to change the way that data is used to get toilets to people who need them.

Our goal with this new blog is to share the ups and downs, the lessons and challenges — and the occasional embarrassing moments! — that have made up our journey so far.

So, in the coming months, expect to read posts on:

  • Launching a nonprofit
  • Building a dream team of trustees and advisors
  • Rethinking philanthropy and partnerships
  • The art and power of collaboration
  • The role of data to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals
  • What data science actually is (we are still learning!)
  • Our theory of system change
  • Interviews with members of our wider team and partnership network
  • The occasional cake recipe and theatre review (not really, just checking if you read the entire list)

We hope you enjoy reading!
